Weather Week Activities

Hi everyone!

Welcome to our final week of school - we will be exploring weather this week! It has been an interesting week of weather here in Watson Lake with lots and lots of rain, even a few thunder showers. Have you heard any thunder in the past week? Have you ever wondered why we hear thunder sometimes? The world's weather systems are fascinating and full of surprises! I hope you learn something new about weather this week and come up with some new questions of your own too!

Have fun with the activities below!

COTTON BALL CLOUDS

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· blue paper (we used 12″ x 12″ size)

· green paper

· cotton balls

· gray paint

· paintbrush

· markers

· scissors

· glue

HOW TO MAKE COTTON BALL CLOUDS:

1. Start by cutting out a small strip of grass from your green paper and glue it to the button of your blue paper. Use your markers to draw trees in your grass.

2. Using you ‘Kinds of Clouds’ sheet (you will find it below in a PDF window) as a reference, make the different types of clouds out of cotton balls and glue them onto your blue paper. Manipulating the cotton balls is great for strengthening those fine motor muscles. Stretch the cotton balls out to make long straight clouds that fill the sky, or pull off pieces of a cotton ball to make smaller balls of clouds or wispy clouds up high in the sky.

3. After making your clouds, you may want to add more details to a few of your clouds with gray paint and markers.

4. Next, make some cloud labels using the list below and line them up next to your cloud picture. Use the ‘Kinds of Clouds’ sheet as a guide again and discuss what each cloud is called, find the correct label for each of your clouds, and glue them onto your cloud picture.

Now, next time you are curious about the weather or what the weather is going to be like you can look out your window or go outside, observe the clouds in the sky, and be your own meteorologist.

Kinds of Clouds LABELS:

Cirrus Stratus Stratocumulus Cumulus Cumulonimbus

RAINBOW TISSUE PAPER COLLAGE

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple tissue paper.

·Black construction paper (cut into frame)

· 2 pieces of clear transparent paper (laminating paper)

HOW TO MAKE RAINBOW TISSUE PAPER COLLAGE:

1. Cut your black construction paper into a frame, whatever size you would like. I used a utility knife and a ruler to cut mine out!

2. Cut 2 pieces of transparent paper, the same size of your frame.

3. Tear or cut your tissue paper into assorted shapes and sizes.

2. Now comes a bit of a tricky part - Remove the backing from the transparent paper – I find doing it from one corner or side to the other (gradually) is the best approach as it doesn't end up sticking to itself. Place your frame on the outside edges of the sticky paper. You will be working with the sticky side up!

3. Assemble your collage rainbow by placing your pieces in the order of the rainbow –

RED - ORANGE - YELLOW - GREEN - BLUE PURPLE

4. Once satisfied with the rainbow, have a parent help to place second piece of transparent paper over the top of your collage.

5. Hang or stick on a window!

HANDS & FINGERS SMILING SUN

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Paper Plate

· Yellow Paint

· Black marker

· Yellow and Orange paper

· Scissors

· Glue or tape

· Pencil

HOW TO MAKE THE HANDS & FINGERS SUN CRAFT:

1. Start by painting the bottom of your plate yellow (or coloring it yellow if you would prefer)

2. Let your sun dry.

3. Working together with someone else, trace your hand 8-10 times on the sheets of yellow and orange paper.

4. Carefully cut out all of your handprints.

5. Check that your sunshine is fully dried, if it is – go ahead and draw a silly sunshine face on the yellow side!

6. Finally, flip your sunshine over and glue or tape your hand cut outs to the edge of the plate to make your rays of sun.

7. Hang it up to enjoy on those not so sunny days.
