Insects and Forest Activities

Happy Tuesday everyone!

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and are ready to explore the forest this week in search of some insects! In this blog post you will find instructions for 2 different craft activities. Enjoy the bugs that you create and take them outside to explore the forest when you've finished!

Polka Dot Bug Craft

Supplies Needed:

· colored construction paper – any color for your bug, green for your leaves, and a small piece of black for the heads and legs

· scissors

· googly eyes

· markers

· glue stick

HOW TO MAKE THE POLKA DOT BUG:

1. Cut along the drawn line through all four layers of paper at the same time.

2. Open up the cut pieces and you should have two identical shapes. Refold along the crease and place the two halves next to each other with the two creases touching.

3. From black construction paper cut out the bug’s legs and a shape for the head.

4. Glue the legs under each body piece, and glue the head to both pieces by holding the two pieces together. Glue the eyes onto the top of your bug’s head.

5. To make the leaf that the bug will sit on, cut the leaf from the green construction paper.

6. Then glue the underside of your bug to the leaf.

7. Use markers decorate your bug! We created colourful dot patterns, and then practiced counting the dots!

PAPER PLATE INSECT CRAFT

SUPPLIES NEEDED

· small paper plates

· yarn

· white, black, red felt

· googly eyes

· scissors

· tape

· glue

How to make it:

1. Cut off a section of yellow yarn to thread through the holes. If you have a yarn needle at home – you can use it make this part a little easier, otherwise you can sew your bugs without – no problem! Tape the other end of the yarn onto the back of your paper plate.

NOW IT’S TIME TO SEW YOUR PAPER PLATE INSECT CRAFT.

2. Pull the yarn needle up a hole in the back of the paper plate to the front of the paper plate. Pull the excess yarn all the way through the hole each time you sew. Then continue sewing down and up the holes around the circle until you reach the end of your yarn. Cut the yarn needle off and tape the end of the yarn onto the back of your paper plate.

3. When making your bee, you’ll also need to thread a piece of black yarn and use it to sew stripes across your bee body. We made about 3 passes through each hole in our stripes to give them some thickness.

4. Cut out two bee wings out of your white felt. Also, cut a black pipe cleaner in half for antennae. Fold the pipe cleaner in half and curl down the ends.

5. To attach the bee antennae, poke the folded end of the pipe cleaner down into the hole at the top of your bee. Then fold it up behind the back of the paper plate and tape it in place.

6. Finish your paper plate insect sewing craft by gluing on your wiggly eyes and felt bee wings with your tacky glue.

HOW TO MAKE THE PAPER PLATE LADYBUG SEWING CRAFT

To make the ladybug, follow the same steps we used for the bee except sew black yarn around your paper plate instead of yellow. Then use red and black felt to create the ladybug wings.
