Bird Week Activities

Now, I must admit that my choice of this theme was very strongly influenced by my own child's interests... She LOVES birds! Bird was her first word and it's still probably the most commonly used word in her vocabulary. So, I was definitely a bit biased in choosing birds to focus on for a whole week.

To be fair, they are incredible animals! We are very lucky here in Watson Lake to see the migration of so many interesting and beautiful species passing through. I hope these crafts will help you feel inspired to go and see if you can find some real birds out there in the world.

Happy birding!

QUICK PIPE CLEANER BIRDS

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Pipe cleaners

· Feathers

· Orange construction paper

· Googly eyes

· Glue

· Scissors

HOW TO MAKE PIPE CLEANER BIRDS:

1. Shape the pipe cleaner into an 'S' by rolling it into a coil at each end – respectively one way and the other.

2. Cut a beak from a folded piece of card. Glue it onto the head. Glue wiggle eyes onto each side of the head and two feathers onto the body for the tail.

PAPER BAG PEACOCK PUPPET

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Brown lunch bag

· Green, blue and yellow construction paper

· Googly eyes

· Feathers

· Sequins

· Glue

· Scissors

1. Use your Glue Stick to add glue to the bottom rectangle of your lunch bag and attach your small blue rectangle. Now add glue to the front of the lunch bag (you’ll have to lift the flap slightly) and attach the larger blue rectangle.

2. Use your Glue Stick again to glue on your yellow triangle beak. Glue one of the triangles on the bottom of the small blue rectangle, and the other one underneath the flap, directly underneath the other triangle.

3. Next glue your green construction paper feather shape onto the back of your paper bag.

4. Use your scissors to cut small feathers all the way around the green construction paper. I cut my feathers extra small and crinkled them a little to give my Peacock some extra texture.

5. Glue on your wiggly eyes and your small blue fluffy feathers with your glue stick.

6. Lastly, add dots of glue onto the Peacock’s green feathers with your Gel Pen and add gold and teal sequins to make the fun designs on the feathers. Once your glue is dry have fun playing with your new Peacock Puppet!

BIRDS ON A WIRE ART PROJECT

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THIS ART PROJECT:

· Bird template (trace out four bird shapes onto black construction paper - use the example photos as a guide or free hand!)

· Tissue paper (variety of colors)

· Black string

· scissors

· tape

HOW TO MAKE BIRDS ON A WIRE:

1. Cut out the four birds on black construction paper.

2. Tear off a strip of yellow, orange, pink and light blue tissue paper the length of your white construction paper and about 3-inches wide.

3. Add glue to the bottom of your white construction paper and glue your yellow tissue paper strip at the bottom of your paper. Add more glue above the yellow tissue paper and at the top of the tissue paper and glue the orange tissue paper onto your paper, overlapping the yellow a bit.

4. Continue adding glue and layering the pink and blue tissue paper onto your white construction paper. Cut off any excess tissue paper hanging off the ends of the paper.

5. Cut a piece of black string cord about 14-inch long. Tape one end of the cording on the back of your cardstock paper in the center of the paper. Stretch the string so it is taut and tape the other end of the cordi on the back of the cardstock in the center of the paper.

6. Glue each of your black bids on top of the black bird wire.
